Yes, there are futon mattresses that are made for cribs. It is the perfect solution I think. Preparing them for college from an early age?....what? No! Futons are great ways to get a wonderful night's sleep. What's more, if you are worried about toxic off-gassing from a mattress, then you might like to pursue this futon crib mattress thing a bit further.
There is no magic zero toxic problem from a futon mattress, don't be fooled. In fact, depending upon where they are made, you might end up in the same situation. So, to make sure that you get a good one, be clear to search for 'futon organic' or something along those lines. This will give you a better place to begin your natural mattress search.

You're right about the emission of toxic fumes into the air (off-gassing) - whether or not it's a problem with a futon depends on the materials used. There are quite a few futons made with organic cotton, inside and out, so there shouldn't be an off-gassing issue there: if it is truly organic, no chemicals were used when growing or processing the cotton. But a lot of futons also have a foam core - often made with polyurethane – which is basically petroleum with a lot of chemicals added to turn it into a foam. One of the other problems with using a futon as an alternative to a crib mattress is that futons are not usually waterproof or, if they are, they're waterproofed with toxic chemicals such as PVC - which has been treated with even more chemicals to turn it into a soft and pliable vinyl. They may also use materials like latex, to which a lot of people are allergic – even if it’s ‘natural.’ But if the futon isn't waterproof, it's going to get wet and it won’t take too long for mold and bacteria to develop. There are organic crib mattresses available that are both firm and comfortable, like a futon. www.Naturepedic.com has a good selection of products. Anyone concerned about toxicity and off-gassing – and just ensuring that the crib mattress their baby sleeps on is a healthy option - might want to check them out. None of the materials used in their mattresses have health issues. One more potential problem when using a futon as a crib mattress is firmness. Babies need a firm mattress and some futons are pretty soft.
